Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of 2025 Secures a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
