American actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, renowned for the award-contending production Slave Play, was detained last month at an international terminal in Japan on suspicion of attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country, authorities announced.

Details of the Customs Apprehension

Harris, 36, was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a customs officer found 0.78 grams of a crystal material containing the designer drug MDMA in his personal bag, according to a customs spokesperson.

He was immediately arrested on suspicion of breaching Japan’s stringent Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Local customs officials filed a criminal accusation with the prosecutor’s office to initiate formal charging proceedings against the playwright.

A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, confirmed that Harris is still being held. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has acknowledged the allegations.

At this time, it is not known whether the figure has secured legal representation in Japan. Inquiries to his management team were not immediately returned.
