The British tennis star secured the most notable win of his career by rallying from a lost first set to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

While he had earlier beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph represents Norrie's first ever success over a sitting world No 1.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who joins as the fifth UK male player in the record books to defeat a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I lost in the first round of qualies here. I just aimed to embrace my performance in the second half of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the greatest victory of my professional life, my initial victory over the top player and likely the most confident competitor in the sport right now."

Norrie, positioned No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme run of nine finals in a row and 17 consecutive elite tournament successes, which marked the finest stretch of outcomes in the young champion's developing career.

Match Breakdown

Alcaraz seemed to be moving confidently towards victory early on as he cruised in the opening set. Nevertheless, Norrie gradually worked himself back into the game by delivering with sharper placement and pulling the Spanish opponent into extended, demanding exchanges. His relentless steadiness and dependability slowly made an impact.

Through most of the contest, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to find his timing with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old seemed particularly struggling hitting his signature shot, which has been the top weapon in the sport for much of this year, producing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 unforced errors. Opposing him, Norrie gave Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, keeping up his steadiness, fitness and penetration throughout while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to advance inside the baseline and strike effectively.

Personal Context

After battling for a long time due to a major left forearm injury and challenges with his form, Norrie slipped as far down as 91st in the rankings this year. Following appearances in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the French Open fourth round after that, this victory further underlines the experienced player's development as he attempts to return to the top 20 and beyond. Alcaraz, despite his remarkable success, is has not yet master how to deliver his top form in indoor conditions.
