The US leader stated on Wednesday evening that he had endorsed the measure resoundingly endorsed by Congress members that instructs the Department of Justice to release more files concerning Jeffrey Epstein, the dead child sexual abuser.

The move arrives after an extended period of opposition from the leader and his backers in the legislature that split his political supporters and created rifts with some of his longtime supporters.

The president had opposed releasing the Epstein documents, describing the situation a "hoax" and condemning those who wanted to make the records accessible, despite vowing their release on the campaign trail.

Nevertheless he changed direction in recent days after it became apparent the legislative chamber would endorse the legislation. Donald Trump stated: "We have nothing to hide".

The specifics remain uncertain what the agency will release in as a result of the legislation – the legislation details a host of possible documents that need to be disclosed, but includes exemptions for some materials.

The legislation calls for the chief law enforcement officer to make non-classified Epstein-related records publicly available "in a searchable and downloadable format", including all investigations into Jeffrey Epstein, his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, flight logs and journey documentation, persons cited or listed in association with his crimes, entities that were tied to his exploitation or financial networks, immunity deals and other plea agreements, official correspondence about charging decisions, evidence of his detention and demise, and details about possible record elimination.

The department will have 30 days to turn over the documents. The bill provides for certain exemptions, such as redactions of confidential victim data or personal files, any depictions of child sexual abuse, publications that would endanger ongoing inquiries or court proceedings and depictions of demise or exploitation.
