The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Season on BBC
The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-part season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.
The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The last season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.
New Challenges for The Team
The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.
In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
Series Legacy
The drama launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.
The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.
The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.
Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
