What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
